The Value of a Friend

By: Awdhesh K Singh
One of the most intriguing things in the modern cities is the price of the land. In Delhi for example, the price of the land could be as high as Rs 250,000 (US$ 600) per square feet in the posh residential area and even many times more in a commercial area. The land prices may be thousands of time lesser in smaller cities in India and many hundred thousand times lesser in rural India. You can perhaps buy a village in the same price which is needed to buy only few hundred square feet of land in Delhi.

We often wonder why the land prices are so high in Delhi or in other metros like Mumbai, Tokyo, London, New York etc. The economists would like to answer this question by resorting to the demand and supply theory which states that if the demand is high but the supply is low, the prices rise while the prices crash in case of low demand and more supply.
But why there is so much demand for a particular piece of Earth while there is so much Earth is available just few miles from the prime property.

  • The Value of Land
It is evident that people do not merely buy land, which anyway remains same all over the world, but they buy a number of things with the land whose price is included in the property. One of the prime acquisitions with the land is the company of the people who lives in the surrounding areas. If the people living around are rich, the price is bound to be high. You also buy a number of things like power supply, law and order, proximity to the prime restaurants, offices, market, hotels, roads etc along with the property. Therefore, when you are buying a piece of land in a city, you are actually buying the whole of the city along with its infrastructure, culture, people etc.
Can you imagine, if you wish to create the same facilities, infrastructure or culture in a isolated place? It would surely cost millions of time more.

  • The Importance of Friend

Just like you get all infrastructures free when you buy a piece of land, you also happen to get many things free when you make a friendship. A friend has the same impact on the mind of the person as the city has on the physical comfort of the person. Emily Dickinson, therefore, said
My friends are my estate."

Imagine going to a place, where you do not have any friend and everyone there is your enemy. You would perhaps not like to stay there even if you are paid to live there. Is it not true that people would not like to go to prison or in a enemy country even if all comforts are made available there.
A friend, like a piece of land, carries with him all his culture and values. If you make him friend, his mind start influencing your mind and gradually it changes so as to develop a synergy with the mind of the friend. Gradually, you find that you have acquired many traits of your friend without any effort on your parts. It is for this reason that it is said, "A Man is known by the company he keeps".
There is not human being who is more unfortunate than a person who has evil friends. In the words of Buddha
insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.

  • Value of a Friend
The value of a friend must be ascertained in the same way as the value of a piece of land is ascertained. The company of the friend can be a great indicator of the value of the friend. If a person lives in a bad company, it is almost impossible for him to be good, just like no land can become a prime land, if the neighboring land is sold at cheap price.
Other important indicator of value is the values, knowledge and education of the person which are like the infrastructures which are created over many years. The culture of the person often plays extremely important roles in shaping the value of the person. Education too gives an indication of the mind of the person, since during education; a person spends many years in the company of the people.
If a person is truly happay and lead a peaceful life, rest assured that he has at least a good friend though most of the people remain unaware of this vital fact. Charles Caleb Colton wisely said, friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost.

  • A Valuable Friend is an Asset
A good friend is, therefore, an asset whose value is known only with the passage of time. No man has ever risen in this world without the company of valuable friends. It is for this reason that one must chose his friends quite carefully who can complement his needs and help him in achieving a valuable life. If one is not careful in selection of his friends he may say one day, God defend me from my friends; from my enemies I can defend myself."
Life is a mystery which can not be explained either by science or by scriptures. Truth has a body and a soul which we call science and religion. Contrary to popular perception, they are not opposed to each other but complement each other like body and soul. In fact, they can not exist without each other.

I am the founding member of The Science of Soul Foundation in India which works for the synthesis of the diverse disciplines of knowledge like science, religion, philosophy and arts. The website of the foundation is http://www.scienceofsoul.com

I am working for the creation of a synthesis between science and religion through my articles. I believe that everyone can understand this Truth by the use of intuition and reason. You can contact me at aksinghirs [a] yahoo.com if you wish to know more about the mystery which we call life.

What Type of Friend Are You? Changing From a Bad Friend to a Good Friend

By: MJ Schrader

We have a variety of relationships with the various people in their lives. There are family, friends, co-workers, the people at church, the people at the function and many more. Yet with each of these people you probably have a different front. Maybe you have the same front with all your friends, but what type of friend are you?

Are you an enabler?
You have a friend that has self destructive behavior. It may not be something as destructive as drugs or alcohol, but it is still not good. Perhaps the friend is a compulsive gambler or spender, and when they can not pay bills, you help. Yet that allows them to spend money on their bad hobby. A variation could be encouraging someone who insults and degrades themselves.

Are you a dodger?

There are people who claim they will do something, yet never do. Claiming you will help someone then finding or saying you have something else to do, is not being a good friend. Yes, things come up, but if you are regularly finding something else, then you need to look at why. Be honest, even if that means saying good bye to a friend because you do not like spending time with them.

Are you a whiner?

The latest action movie is what your friends want to see, you complain that movie has too much violence. Your friends want to go out for Mexican, you whine that Mexican gives you heartburn. Perhaps your friends decide to agree to your demands, perhaps they ignore them. Chances are if you are always complaining, they notice. They may even be debating dumping you from group activities. Try to agree. If Mexican food really upsets your stomach, offer alternatives, or tell them you will watch the other movie and meet them after.

How can you change?

It is not easy to change who you are, yet it can be done. Watch when you are not doing things to make your relationship, and yourself better. If you are consistently falling into a bad pattern with just one friend, maybe you need to change your relationship. However if you realize you are not being a good friend with all your friends, then make changes.

What should you do?

When you start to complain, stop. When you make a promise to friends follow through or just do not say you are going to do something. You can always not say anything, and show up or help when no one expects it. Your friendships will grow when you allow yourself to be happy in the moment. You can change the world just by changing yourself.

How to Find a New Best Friend

By: Alexa Rae Ciriaco

For women, best friends are viewed as twin sisters that got separated from birth. Or, they may also be a reflection of one's inner personality. A day is not a day without hearing even a word from your best friend. It is sad to not have your best friend around even if she always point out your mistakes and pulls your hair for your unacceptable behavior. Best friends are irreplaceable because of their unique abilities to change your life in a better sense. But what will happen if your best friend is no longer free to be with you anytime of the day? Will you stop loving life because of her absence? Surely, things happen for a reason. Maybe another best friend is waiting for you down the line. All you have to do is use your heart in finding the right best friend for you. And so, to help you more with your search, try to put into your mind and heart the following guides to help you through.
Never compare.

Usually, in trying to find a new person in the place of your best friend, you are trying to compare your experience between the two. This will not get you anywhere. Why? It is because each person has lovable qualities perfect for a best friend. If your new friend has a different way of being a friend compared to your other best friend, it doesn't mean she can no longer be a probable best friend. Try to get to know her better before even finalizing things that no one can be of the same level with your best friend. A lot can happen over time, and you wouldn't want to regret your decisions in the future.

Be open

Do not be too snobbish towards other people who want to befriend you. Open yourself to more possibilities. Do not limit yourself on the things you got used on doing with your best friend. Try to explore new grounds and experiences with other people. As you widen your space, you will have a greater chance of meeting new people and possible best friends. Maybe you should also try getting to know other people from work or school whom you haven't talked with that much before. Now is your chance to build new connections and realize new things about yourself through other people.

Learn to share

There is nothing wrong in telling a little more about yourself to others. Sometimes even simple things can create long and meaningful conversations with different people. Sooner or later you will be surprised in finding other people sharing the same thoughts and sentiments as you. It is even helpful if you would join forums, group discussions, and other interesting organizations, where you can find other people who may have common qualities with you, or better yet simple interesting for you to get to know more.

Offer that hand

Friendships can have a good start thru companionship, sympathy, and benevolence. It doesn't need to be a big charity work. Actually, a simple offering of your hand to a person who has a lot of things to carry is a great way enough to start a friendship. But this act of kindness must be from your heart, and not just because you are in search of a new friend.

Friendship - Understanding It

By: Alfred Chai Wei Liang

There are many kinds of friends. Good or bad or in between, they are people. And people are intuitive. Trust, is most prevalent in the closest friendships.
Friends come and go, really. In life, the number of great friends actually decrease. Why? Despite knowing more and more people as time progresses, people change. Often, it is the common things that bind people together, creating friendships. The 'problem' of friends who change, we always find them different. It is this difference that clashes with the 'common things' discussed earlier.

In real fact, being in a friendship require social skills. The thing is, not everyone is capable of certain level of these skills. Take this case for example. A stranger who is socially skilled can be 100% comfortable with you. In other words, he can be himself. The effect is, you would develop a strong liking for this particular stranger. What explains the strong liking or admiration (that serves as backbone for most friendships) can be traced back to one thing, social skills. Today, the modern world measure social skills, like the measurable brute strength that cavemen had in stone age times.

On the contrary, you can easily find 2 friends who are the complete opposite with each other. One would be reacting to another more. The another can be always seen taking charge, making most decisions. Such co operation exists. In this case, opposites attract. For examples, a talkative person with a quiet one, and the leader in a group with his other 'follower' friends.
Friendship also requires 'lubrication'. When you do not see a person for a long time ('not lubricating'), the friendship can go in different paths. This 'lubrication effect' is especially prevalent in 'hi bye' friends, mere acquaintances. Best friends often 'lubricate' when they meet every time. But still, friends who change (good or bad) remains the factor that affects the friendship.

"Friendship is mostly based upon values being exchanged between 2 or more persons". These values can be social values (compliments, making the other person feel good), monetary gains, society hierarchy (boss and employee) among many other values. In lay man term, wherever there is something to gain, friendships can prosper. I am not saying that all friendships are based upon this. But, as a young adult, I think this is the norm.

I wish humans, particularly adults, can live like children again. The essence of innocence, drives forces like honesty and simplicity. That these 2 alone, will dissolve all complex thoughts that are governing us. This one aspect, I believe can inspire true friendship.
Alfred writes on self improvement and provides useful tips about its relevant topics. You can also find him where he has a latest website at http://www.yamahaguitaracoustic.com/ which helps people find cheap Yamaha acoustic guitar when looking for reviews and Yamaha acoustic guitar descriptions.

Relationship - How to Avoid Broken Friendship

By: Joshua Nyamache

No! No! It has happened again. Damn it, another broken friendship to nurse! What is wrong with me? But I could control my anger. It is barely six months before I had a conflict with Wendy and we called it quits. What is the reason why I can't get along with my buddies? This really hurts me.

This is the scenario that most of us find ourselves in. Breaking up with a long time friend whom you cherished and treasured so much can really hurt you. You will be missing her and every time you're bored and lonely you wish she could be there. You will keep on recalling the good moments and fun you had together.

Do you know that words are powerful things? They may make a person to cherish, treasure or hate you forever. So, watch the words you utter from your mouth. They have ruined many friendships. Don't use words that criticize your friends. There is no single person who would stand criticism. This is because it kills worthiness and effectiveness of an individual. It always ends in futility.
Don't be fond of arguing with your friends. This will lead to a broken friendship. No one would like to befriend someone who argues every time and about almost everything. Make a habit of being a good listener. An argument with your friends will have no winner.

Why? This is because the way you are convinced that you are absolutely right is the same way your friends are convinced that they are also absolutely right. Try to understand their point of view of understanding things. Simply be tactful when it comes to arguments.
Appreciate your friends and this will make them to realize how important they are. They are human beings and being so, they value friends who make them feel important. You can do this by using simple ways such as inviting them when you have important functions, solving their problems, sending them friendship cards and quotes etc.

Pay attention when they speak. All I mean is that you should always be a good listener. Find out what they like doing or passionate about and then question them about it. You will be amazed how they will talk nonstop. Of course, any human being is proud of his passion and achievements. In short, encourage your friends to talk by engaging them on what they value most in their lives.
Don't turn down your friend's invitation every now and again. Accept their invitation graciously. However, sometimes you may not be able to attend because of unavoidable circumstances. In such circumstances, call them. Tell them that you would love to attend but you're not sure. You are doing this because you don't want them to think that you're purposely choosing not to attend.

In conclusion, make use of William James quote, "The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated." And this quote is similar to what Jesus said "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

Imagine what if you could make your friends cherish and treasure you all the time? There will be no break ups. You can do this by clicking best friends a treasure to protect and enjoy to learn how to talk with your friends which of course most people lack in their lives. You have got to see how to bring and contribute to your friend's happiness and joy!
